HABITAT CONTROL (MANAGEMENT)

A wild animal's habitat is its surroundings as a whole, including plants, ground cover, shelter and other animals on the land. Habitat control - or habitat management - means activity using the land to create or promote an environment that is beneficial to wildlife on the land.

BRUSH MANAGEMENT
Much of my place is covered with young juniper as under story.
My plan states that I need to remove some of the under story juniper in areas that can produce good growth of grasses and herbs.
The juniper is thicker in some areas than other.
Even though there is too much juniper, there is still excellent stands of oaks throughout the property.
The chain saw has become my friend!!! "Right"
After cutting the juniper, I stack it along my road for later removal or chipping.
Some of the juniper is left for cover.
It doesn't take long for the grasses and herbs to start covering the area.

HABITAT PROTECTION FOR SPECIES OF CONCERN
One of my species of concern is the Golden-cheeked warbler.
There are four to five pairs nesting on the property.
Perferred habitat of the Golden-cheeked is oaks and mature juniper.
There are Lacy Oak, Texas Oak, Vasey Oak, and Live Oak on the property.

Winter time makes it easy to see the abundance of oak and other hard woods on the property.
Another species of concern for the property is the Indigo Snake.
They like brushy habitat with holes (like armadillo holes) to hide in.

PRESCRIBED CONTROL OF NATIVE, EXOTIC, AND FERAL SPECIES

Control of native porcupines for management of habitat.
Destruction of Lead tree by porcupines.
Control of white-tailed deer for management of habitat.
Deer eat some of the plants that are important for species of concern.
